6 tips to help prevent motion sickness and enjoy a worry free holiday
During the long Songkran holiday this year, many people are planning fun trips with family and friends. But one thing that could ruin your plans is motion sickness. Let’s first understand what causes it. Motion sickness—whether from cars, boats, or other vehicles—happens when the part of the brain that controls balance (located in the inner ear) receives signals that don’t match what the eyes see. This imbalance confuses the brain, leading to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. And that’s enough to turn an exciting trip into a miserable one.
Here are 6 tips to help prevent motion sickness and enjoy a worry free holiday
- Sit in the front seat – It helps your body sense the car's movement better and stay in sync with it, reducing dizziness.
- Avoid reading or using your phone – Focusing on a fixed point can confuse your sense of balance. Try looking at the scenery outside instead.
- Sip carbonated drinks – It helps relieve queasiness. Deep, rhythmic breathing can also reduce nausea.
- Bring inhalers, balms, or lozenges – These can help ease nausea and dizziness when symptoms start.
- Take anti-motion sickness medication – Such as Dimenhydrinate before traveling. It helps your body adjust to motion and may make you drowsy, which is good—sleeping through the ride helps too!
- Try sour fruits – Like mango, hog plum, or tamarind. The tanginess can help refresh the body and reduce nausea. Just don’t eat too much or it might upset your stomach.
If symptoms persist, lie down and close your eyes to reduce visual input to the brain. This allows your inner ear (balance center) to take over and recalibrate. If you manage to fall asleep, even better—your brain will temporarily stop processing motion signals, and the nausea should go away on its own.
