How to check? that you are "Belly Obesity"

Belly obesity refers to a type of obesity where there is excessive fat accumulation in the abdomen. It can be associated with other problems such as high blood sugar, high blood fat, and high blood pressure. Belly obesity is a significant cause of many dangerous diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, because obesity leads to various chronic illnesses. Therefore, understanding obesity, preventing excessive weight gain, and controlling fat levels are crucial.

How to Check if You Have "Belly Obesity"?

The criteria for diagnosing belly obesity involve measuring waist circumference. This should be done while standing straight and exhaling, preferably in the morning before eating. Measure at the midpoint between the lower edge of the last rib and the highest point of the hip bone. For Thai adults, a waist circumference greater than 90 centimeters (36 inches) in men and greater than 80 centimeters (32 inches) in women, combined with at least two of the following four risk factors, indicates belly obesity:

  • Blood pressure of 130/85 mmHg or higher
  • Blood triglyceride level over 150 mg/dL
  • Fasting plasma glucose level over 100 mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol level less than 40 mg/dL in men and less than 50 mg/dL in women

Factors Leading to Belly Obesity:

  • Existing health issues or chronic conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders
  • Imbalance in the body's metabolic system
  • High blood sugar levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Lack of exercise or physical activity, often seen in office workers who sit all day
  • Poor eating habits, such as skipping breakfast or consuming high-sugar, high-fat, or fried foods
  • Alcohol consumption, which can lead to weight gain and reduced bodily efficiency
  • Snacking habits without compensating with physical activity
  • Stress, which reduces the body's oxygen production, hindering metabolism
  • Poor sleep habits, such as staying up late and inadequate rest, contributing to increased abdominal fat
  • Genetics, as a family history of belly obesity increases the risk, although lifestyle factors are more influential

Nearly 30% of Thai adults over 35 suffer from belly obesity. Compared to neighboring ASEAN countries, Thailand ranks second in obesity prevalence. Awareness and self-care are crucial for preventing obesity, focusing on long-term health rather than just the number on the scale. Pay attention to yourself and your loved ones to avoid the health issues associated with belly obesity.
